Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. I hope you enjoy DANCE LIKE A LEAF, a 330-word lyrical picture book written from the heart.
A child and her grandma share a special bond during autumn. Grandma’s health deteriorates as the leaves change, but the child gradually takes the lead as she pleads with Grandma to participate in their favorite fall activities. After winter arrives, and Grandma is gone, the child observes Grandma’s empty bed, tidy tea cups, and rainbow of scarves. An idea grows as the seasons change, and when fall returns the child honors Grandma’s memory by waving to the trees, singing with the breeze, and dancing under falling leaves just like Grandma taught her.
This story is based on the farewell letter I wrote my grandma. She passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2014. Grandma Jeanne taught me the beauty of painting with words when I was a little girl. Every fall I honor her memory by sipping tea while I write and dancing under falling leaves while I go on creative walks.
In 2017, I was selected for a picture book writing mentorship with Laura Gehl through Writing with the Stars. I received a B.A. in journalism and women’s and gender studies from the University of Oregon. I am an active member of the SCBWI, 12×12, and Storyteller Academy. My work has appeared in Midwifery Today.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Fall is Grandma’s favorite season.
We always sip our tea.
“Tea makes your tummy toasty,” Grandma says.
We bundle up.
“The more scarves, the better,” Grandma says.
We wave to the trees.
“Hello trees!” Grandma says.
We sing with the breeze.
“Loud and proud!” Grandma says.
And we dance under falling leaves.
