PBParty 22: The Chipmunks of S.T.E.M.
Title:
The Chipmunks of S.T.E.M.
Genre:
Chapter Book
Word Count:
9,000
Query:

Stash and Tricksy are super chipmunk S.T.E.M. problem-solvers for all their forest friends, but their arch-enemy Cracker won’t stop tormenting them. When Cracker finds himself trapped, the two friends must decide whether to use their S.T.E.M. skills rescue him or let him face his troubles on his own.

THE CHIPMUNKS OF S.T.E.M. is an 9000 word easy reader chapter book, similar to the recently released CHARLOTTE THE SCIENTIST IS SQUISHED, and the chipmunk’s solutions correlate with the elementary Next Gen Science Standards on energy.

Each chapter includes at least one pause point where resourceful readers can imagine how they might use the materials the chipmunks have gathered to engineer their own solution to the problem. The end of the book includes easy experiments for readers to do with their families.

I am an award winning retired teacher who recently returned to the classroom to teach S.T.E.M. to students in grades 3-9. Many of the problems and solutions in THE CHIPMUNKS OF S.T.E.M. are based on experiments and engineering design problems that I have done with my students.

I am a PAL member of SCBWI and a 2017, 2018 member of Julie Hedlund’s 12×12 Challenge.

Thank you for this opportunity.

Excerpt:
Stash reached down and picked up the gum wrapper lying on the sidewalk.  He looked left, looked right, and then stuffed it into his cheek pouch.

“Caught ya!”

Stash turned and spied Cracker and two other chipmunks peeking out from behind the park statue.

“You are so totally busted!” Cracker cackled. “Hey, what has trash and flies?”

Cracker pointed at Stash. “You do, Get it? Flies love garbage and you’re a walking garbage dump…ha ha ha.”

Cracker and his pals ran off, and Stash walked over to the fountain and sat on the steps. He buried his head in his paws.
