Dear Most Wonderful PBParty Hostesses,

Thank you for hosting the PBParty and for the opportunity to submit to you.

DEAR HUMAN (750 words plus back matter) is an eye-opening picture book told in letters – sincere, informative, and sometimes humorous – written by a walrus in the Arctic. The walrus begins her letter-writing campaign because she is concerned about her sea ice melting. She writes to the United Nations, the President, an oil tycoon, a mayor, and finally a family, hoping they will help. But in the letters returned to the walrus, the prospect of change seems slim. Readers will be happily surprised to learn who does step up to help. While the idea of walruses writing letters (sent and returned to her by a human Arctic native) is absurd, the story provides a platform from which to launch larger discussions about the causes and effects of climate change.

Excerpt:

Dear Human,

Greetings from the Arctic! I am a walrus. I would like to bring to your attention that the Arctic sea ice is melting. Rapidly. I’m told that humans have something to do with this.

I need that ice! I use ice platforms to rest on between dives as I hunt for food.
