When Mako Brown moves into an old, crumbly apartment building, she thinks it’s just that: an old, crumbly apartment building. But the thumping, scraping, and roaring from the roof tell her otherwise. Mako follows the sounds and discovers a secret hotel for ghoul dragons on the roof of her apartment building. After befriending one of the ghoul dragons, Mako will risk a dangerous journey to find the medicine to cure her new dragon friend.

Mako and the Ghoul Dragons is an adventurous, magical chapter book with heart aimed at children ages 6-8.

As a young reader, chapter books with dragons were some of my first loves. This story, with series potential, taps into my love of dragons as well as my experiences as an Army kid moving to strange new places again and again.

I am currently unagented, though my debut picture book came out with Cedar Fort Publishing in 2018 (The Atonement of Jesus Christ is for Me). I write picture books, chapter books, and middle grade novels. I am a member of SCBWI and participate in regular critique groups. I attend writing conferences and constantly work to hone my craft. I also eat entirely too much chocolate.

Mako Brown heard the noises almost as soon as she moved in. Tapping, scraping, and even large thumping, with the occasional roar. The problem was, no one else could hear them.

On the third day, the scraping sounded like giant needles dragging across the ceiling right above Mako’s bed.

“Mom, come in my room!” called Mako. “The scraping sound is back!”

“What’s that, Mako-chan? I’m looking for my screwdriver,” called Mom.

Mako gently tied off the little bandage on her pet tarantula Mushi’s leg and placed Mushi in the bug jar clipped to her belt loop. She walked into the living room.
